Dulux Egyptian Cotton: Why Everyone's Painting Their Walls This Colour

Dulux's Egyptian Cotton has become one of the most searched neutral paints in Ireland. It's worth looking at alternatives, and what to check for (undertone and LRV) before you pick one.

If you've scrolled TikTok or Pinterest looking for the "perfect neutral" in the last year or two, you've almost certainly come across Egyptian Cotton by Dulux. It's become one of the most searched paint colours in the UK and Ireland, and it's not hard to see why - sales reportedly jumped over 30% in a single year as the colour went viral.

What is Egyptian Cotton?

Egyptian Cotton (colour code 40YY 65/061) is a warm, creamy off-white with a soft beige undertone - sometimes described as having just the faintest hint of khaki. It sits in that sweet spot between a true white and a full beige, which is a big part of why it works in so many spaces: it's warm enough to feel cosy, but light enough to keep a room feeling open and bright.

It has a fairly high LRV (light reflectance value), meaning it bounces back a good amount of light rather than absorbing it - useful if you're working with a room that doesn't get much natural sun.

Why it works

  • Versatile undertone - warm without tipping into "builder's magnolia" territory
  • Pairs with almost anything - works well against natural wood, warm greys, navy, and darker accent colours
  • Flatters most rooms - hallways, living rooms, and bedrooms all show up as popular picks for it
  • Available across Dulux's full range - matt, easycare, diamond matt, trade finishes, so it's easy to get consistently whatever the room's demands

Where it tends to get used

Living rooms and hallways are the most common picks, since the warmth reads as inviting without competing with furniture or flooring. It's also a popular choice for home offices and bedrooms where a calm, neutral backdrop matters more than a strong style statement.

One thing to know before you commit

Like any neutral, Egyptian Cotton shifts depending on your room's light, aspect, and existing furnishings - what reads as a soft warm white in a south-facing room can look noticeably more beige in a north-facing one. Worth testing a sample patch (or a digital wall preview) before committing to a full room.
