The paint colours Ireland and the UK looked at in October

Egyptian Cotton led both lists again, but while Ireland's top seven stayed pale, Dulux took the UK's top four and put a mid-tone neutral in third.

Between 1 and 29 October, people in Ireland and in the UK opened the same paint colour on Swatcher more than any other, for the second month running: Dulux's Egyptian Cotton, a pale neutral. Below it, the two lists went in different directions.

Both lists are in the order the most people opened each colour's page, counting a person once a day rather than once a tap. Ireland here is the Republic; the UK list includes Northern Ireland.

Ireland: still pale, with new names

  1. Egyptian Cotton, Dulux. A pale neutral.
  2. Salter Stone, Colourtrend. A pale neutral.
  3. Skimming Stone, Farrow & Ball. A pale grey.
  4. Elephants Breath, Farrow & Ball. A light neutral.
  5. Timeless, Dulux. A white.
  6. Batch Loaf, Colourtrend. A white.
  7. Wimborne White, Farrow & Ball. A white.

Ireland's top seven is again all whites, pale greys and soft neutrals, but four of the seven are new to it. Salter Stone came in at second, Elephants Breath at fourth, and Batch Loaf and Wimborne White joined them. Shell Cove and Ivory Tusk, both in last month's top three, dropped out, as did Jitney and Setting Plaster. Skimming Stone climbed from fifth to third. Colourtrend still has two places, both in the top six.

The UK: Dulux at the top, a mid-tone in third

  1. Egyptian Cotton, Dulux. A pale neutral.
  2. Timeless, Dulux. A white.
  3. Brave Ground, Dulux. A mid-tone neutral.
  4. Natural Hessian, Dulux. A pale neutral.
  5. Jitney, Farrow & Ball. A light neutral.
  6. White 03, Lick. A white.
  7. Wimborne White, Farrow & Ball. A white.

Dulux holds the UK's top four. Brave Ground, the one mid-tone in either list, climbed to third, and Jitney came in at fifth. Preference Red, last month's deep red, dropped out, and so did School House White and Skimming Stone. Just below the top seven sit a cluster of greens, from Farrow & Ball and Dulux, which Ireland's list has none of.

Three colours are in both lists: Egyptian Cotton, Timeless and Wimborne White.

What to make of it

The places near the bottom of each list are close, so read it as a first look rather than a verdict. The live ranking moves as people use it.

The colour demand report tracks this properly: the island of Ireland and Great Britain side by side, every brand in the catalogue, quarter on quarter.
